National Zoo reveals sex of surviving giant panda cub

The National Zoo in Washington D.C. has revealed the sex of the surviving giant panda cub born this past Saturday.

NBC 4 Washington noted that on Friday morning, the zoo announced that the panda cub is a male. Zoo officials also said that his sibling that died was a male as well.

As we previously reported, the fraternal twin cubs were born to Mei Xiang last week, but sadly the smaller died on Thursday. Veterinarians worked for six hours to try and save him. His cause of death was likely from pneumonia which he developed after breathing in food material.

Tian Tian is the father of the cubs. He and Mei Xiang also have another son Tai Shan and a daughter Bao Bao together. Tai Shan was born in 2005 and lives in China. Bao Bao was born 2013 and still lives at the National Zoo where her parents are.

The larger surviving cub and his mother are both doing well.
