New York Yankees call up top prospect Greg Bird

The New York Yankees called up first baseman prospect Greg Bird on Thursday.

Bird is one of the Yankees top prospects. He is one of four prospects that the Yankees consider to be “untouchable.” He is expected to be Mark Teixeira’s backup, according to the New York Daily News. Bird could also be the designated hitter if they want to rest Alex Rodriguez.

“I think the thought is to give Tex a rest. Possibly give A-Rod a rest this weekend,” Yankees co-owner Hal Steinbrenner said at the owners meeting, the New York Post notes. “He’s been hitting well at Triple-A, so we’ll see. But we’re going to start to see these kids. It’s about time.”

The Yankees acquired Bird in the 2011 draft. This season he has played for Double-A Trenton and Triple-A Scranton. He hit .258 with six homeruns and 29 RBIS with Double-A Trenton and was hitting .301 with six homeruns, 23 RBIs, and a .853 OPS with Triple-A Scranton, according to ESPN. Bird is a .282 career hitter with 48 homeruns in 347 minor league games.

Bird will join the Yankees Thursday night in Cleveland as the Yankees play the Cleveland Indians. The Yankees, who had been in first place in the AL East, have struggled lately, losing six of their last seven games. They now trail the Toronto Blue Jays by half a game.
