Owen Wilson opens up about his father’s battle with Alzheimer’s disease for first time

Owen Wilson is best known for comedies, but he’s getting serious - and not just with his new movie. In a new interview, the No Escape actor spoke about his father Robert A. Wilson’s battle with Alzheimer’s disease publicly for the first time.

Wilson spoke with the Dallas Morning News about his new film, which centers on a father trying to protect his children overseas. It’s a story that’s personal for him, since his own father was protective of Wilson and his brothers (actors Luke and Andrew). That makes it hard to see his father battle Alzheimer’s.

“It’s a rough thing,” he told the Morning News. “It’s one of those things where if somebody had said 10 years ago, when my dad and I were joking around, having a putting match, that this is the position your dad’s going to be in, where he basically needs 24-hour care, you’d think, ‘Gosh, I won’t be able to handle that. That’s just not possible.’”

Wilson explained that he has just had to accept it and deal with it.

“For me and my brothers, there just wasn’t a bigger influence on us. Maybe it sounds trite or something, but I really believe that his spirit gets carried on through me, the way I like to joke around,” Wilson said.

Robert A. Wilson is a longtime Dallas executive and was in charge of the city’s public television station KERA, notes The Associated Press.

Wilson, who has two sons himself, stars in No Escape with Luke Bell. The film hits theaters on Wednesday. He also stars in She’s Funny That Way, which opened in limited release this past weekend.
