Simon Cowell thinks One Direction's break will be 'healthy' for him, isn't sure if they will split up

Simon Cowell thinks One Direction’s upcoming break is necessary because the group has been working non-stop for the past five years.

Cowell, who put the group together himself on UK’s X Factor and signed them to his record label, spoke to Yahoo UK about the four remaining members being overworked.

He said of Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Liam Payne and Louis Tomlinson, "Even though they were young, that was a grueling schedule and after a while I could see they were exhausted.”

He went on to say that taking a year off to unwind is “going to be a healthy thing” for them.

When One Direction announced plans to take a hiatus, rumors started swirling that they were going to break up.

Horan took to Twitter to deny those rumors, writing, “Ok so Lots of rumours going round. We are not splitting up, but we will be taking a well earned break at some point next year. Don't worry though, we still have lots we want to achieve ! Can't wait for you to hear all the new music we have for you and to perform.”

Cowell was honest when he said he wasn't sure if they would stay apart after their break, saying, "I don't know if they're definitely going to split up to be honest with you."

He revealed the advice he always gives them, which is "I said 'Make your own decisions. I hope you stay together, but you've got to want to do it for yourselves.' But they're smart guys, and they'll work it out."
