Toy maker Ty creates Cecil the lion Beanie Babies to raise awareness

The toy maker Ty has announced that it is creating Cecil the lion Beanie Babies to raise awareness after the animal was allegedly tracked and illegally killed last month.

The Chicago Tribune noted that the company’s founder, Ty Warner, made the announcement on Monday.

"Hopefully, this special Beanie Baby will raise awareness for animal conservation and give comfort to all saddened by the loss of Cecil," Warner, who also serves as chairman of the company, said.

He added that the all the profits from the plush toys sold will go to WildCRU, a Wildlife Conservation Research Unit of the University of Oxford in England.

Cecil was lured out a national park in Zimbabwe earlier this month wounded, tracked and then killed. Walter Palmer, a dentist from Minnesota, is believed to have paid $50,000 for the kill and allegedly wanted the animal’s head as a hunting trophy.

As we previously reported, Delta airlines announced that in light of the killing it would no longer ship hunting trophies.

The death of the male lion has caused public outrage and Palmer has gone into hiding.
