Twitter drops annoying 140-character limit on direct messages

Starting today, you can finally send a Twitter direct message to anyone without worrying about hitting the 140-character ceiling. The social network finally dropped the character limit on direct messages, effectively today.

Twitter announced the change, but don’t expect it to come to public Twitter any time soon. The 140-character limit is still in effect there.

“It's the No. 1 request we get from folks,” Sachin Agarwal, product manager for DMs, told The Verge today. “They want to be able to say what's on their mind and be themselves."

The change will also be effective in third-party Twitter apps.

This is the latest change to DMs in recent months. In January, Twitter added a group DM feature. Other recent changes include letting users send links through DMs and sharing public tweets in a DM.

Agarwal told The Verge that the company is not thinking about launching a stand-alone DM app that would be similar to Facebook’s Messenger app. He believes that Twitter DMs are mostly used as a way to discuss Twitter activity privately among friends.

For now at least, you can finally send that long letter to a friend through Twitter you’ve been meaning to write.
