‘Fear the Walking Dead’ S01E02 recap: ‘So Close, Yet So Far’

On Sunday, August 30, the second episode of Fear the Walking Dead played. Just in case you missed it, here is a recap of what happened.

The show opens with a look at the empty school, then moves to Alecia walking down the block to her house. When she gets there, she finds the door open. She enters, calling for her boyfriend, Matt. The house is a wreck. She looks around and finds Matt in bad shape.

Travis, Maddie, and Nick peal out in the truck, rushing towards home. Nick looks for news of the virus on the radio, but there’s nothing. Alecia calls Maddie to tell her about Matt. Maddie tells her to call 911 and stay away from Matt. They’re 10 minutes away.

Maddie, Travis, & Nick get home and tell Alecia to step away from Matt. Alecia says if Matt has it, she has it. Travis questions Matt about when it started. He sends Alecia for water and discovers a bite mark on Matt’s shoulder. Maddie tries to get Alecia to wait outside, but she refuses. Matt talks her into it. Maddie thanks him.

Christopher, Travis’s son, is on the bus. His dad tries to call, but he refuses the call on his cell. Christopher’s bus stops in traffic. Someone gets on saying that the cops shot a homeless man 20 times. Everyone runs off the bus to see what is happening.

Travis can’t get ahold of Liza or Christopher. Maddie tells him to go get them. He says if he takes too long, for Maddie and the kids to leave and he’ll catch up with them.

Travis gets ahold of Liza on the phone while driving. He tells her he’s on his way over. Liza says no, that he can’t have Chris. She won’t listen, doesn’t understand what he’s talking about. She hangs up on him.

Nick starts going through withdrawal from the heroin. Maddie can’t get a hold of the doctor for a prescription to get him through. Maddie remembers that the nurse’s office at the school stores students’ medications and leaves Alecia to look after Nick. Alecia is worried about Matt. She tries to leave the house, but Nick goes into a seizure, forcing her to stay.

Meanwhile, the scene around the homeless man becomes a protest. Chris starts filming the police.

Travis arrives at Liza’s house. He convinces her that they need to look for Chris. He calls Chris from Liza’s phone who tells them he’s at a protest. He refuses to leave, but Liza finds it on the news and they head out to get him.

Maddie enters the school and takes the keys from the principal’s office. She pries open the locker in the nurse’s station and takes the meds she needs. She is startled to find Tobias in the school looking for canned goods. She gives him back his knife. He warns her about the power grid and cell phone use collapsing. On their way out of the school, Tobias is attacked by Artie, the principal – now a zombie. Maddie bashes Artie’s head in with a fire extinguisher. They leave, and Maddie drives Tobias home. She offers to let him stay with her family until the situation is over, but he refuses saying he’ll be okay.

Travis and Liza show up at the protest to find Chris. Liza spots the man who’s been shot as well as the hazmat team being called in to take care of it. Liza and Travis force Chris to leave, while a police riot unit starts coming through with its shields. The police shoot another woman in the head and full riot breaks out. Travis gets a barbershop keeper to let them ride out the riot inside his store with his family. He tries to turn them down, but his wife tells him to let them in. Travis fills Liza in on what he knows.

Maddie gets home to find that Travis hasn’t called yet. She gives Nick an oxy telling him that they’ll have to ration them until they get to the desert. Nick tells her that Alecia tried to leave, but that he stopped her. Maddie uses the tub faucet to wash Artie’s blood out of her jacket sleeves, and breaks down crying. Her cell phone rings – it’s Travis. He tells her he found Chris and that they’re safe, but he’s stuck, so he can’t come home yet. He tells Maddie to leave with the kids and that he’ll find them later. She says no and then the cell service goes out. She opens the bathroom door to find Alecia asking her what happened while she was out. Maddie doesn’t answer her.

Alecia says the phone lines keep going off and on and the power keeps going out. Alecia sees the neighbors being attacked by their family’s father. She tries to rush out to help, but Maddie drags her back in and locks the door.

The last scene is Travis and his family at the barbershop. The shop owner’s wife is praying. The scene ends with her blowing out the last candle and the screen goes dark.
