‘Sons of Anarchy’ spinoff could feature familiar characters, says Kurt Sutter

Now that we know that Kurt Sutter is working with FX to create a spinoff of Sons of Anarchy, the creator is revealing a bit more about the project, which is still in the very early development stages. In a new interview this week, Sutter suggested that the new show might include appearances from some of the familiar SOA characters.

Late last month, Sutter confirmed a report that he is developing an SOA spinoff that would feature the Mayans, the Hispanic motorcycle gang that open clashed with SAMCRO. Not much was revealed at the time, but while promoting The Bastard Executioner, Sutter let some more details slip.

Sutter told Deadline that the new project will be set far from Northern California so it wouldn’t clash with the main SOA characters. However, he teased “some cool, ironic crossovers” after the show gets established. The show would give audiences a look at how the Hispanic culture would influence the biker subculture.

“It doesn’t mean that there couldn’t be some cool, ironic crossovers with familiar characters as the series progressed. I wouldn’t want to set it too close to the world we already know, and step on that,” Sutter said.

Sutter also reveals that he has an idea for a limited series prequel to SOA, which would explain how the relationship between John Teller and Piney (William Luckey) developed in Vietnam. The 10- or 12-episode series would also focus on the creation of the Sons of Anarchy Motorcycle Club.

The Bastard Executioner, Sutter’s new FX show, starts on Sept. 15.
