Andrew Garfield thinks it’s time for a ‘pansexual Spider-Man’

For an actor who no longer plays Spider-Man, Andrew Garfield has spent a lot of time recently talking about the part he lost to Tom Holland, from endorsing his replacement to confirming that he was never asked back. His most recent comments about the web-slinger center on the character’s sexuality.

During an interview with Mic, Garfield said he thinks the world should be ready for a Spider-Man that’s not strictly heterosexual.

“I'm excited to get to the point where we don't have to have this conversation, where we can have a pansexual Spider-Man,” Garfield told the site. He also said that he doesn’t “give a s**t about the sexual preference” of the fictional character he played in the two Amazing Spider-Man movies.

As Mic notes, this isn’t the first time Garfield has suggested that Peter Parker/Spider-Man could decide to explore his sexuality. He brought it up in a 2013 Entertainment Weekly interview.

“Why can’t we discover that Peter is exploring his sexuality? It’s hardly even groundbreaking!…So why can’t he be gay? Why can’t he be into boys?” Garfield told EW.

While Garfield wished that Sony would allow for a more open Spider-Man, leaked Sony emails showed that the studio didn’t agree. They insisted that Spidey be white and “not a homosexual.”

Garfield doesn’t have to worry about this any more, though. He’s been replaced by Tom Holland, a casting he has approved of. Garfield also revealed that he was never offered to play Spidey again when Sony agreed to let Marvel start producing the future Spider-Man films.
