Ben Carson gains ground on Donald Trump, recent poll shows

Recent polls show Republican presidential candidate Ben Carson is closing the gap between himself and frontrunner Donald Trump.

CBS News reports Carson now trails Trump 27 percent to 23 percent nationally among Republican primary voters.

The retired neurosurgeons’ support has risen since the first Republican presidential debate while much of the rest of the field has fallen behind or in Rick Perry’s case dropped out completely.

Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee and Florida Sen. Marco Rubio have seen their support drop and are currently tied for third place. However, the majority of voters believe it is still too early to decide which candidate they will vote for in 2016 leaving room for more shifts in the polls.

According to Business Insider one survey found that if Carson and Trump were the two final candidates in the primary, voters would prefer Carson by a 19-point margin.

The two will share the main stage with nine others Wednesday night at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley, California.
