Bernie Sanders takes on 'The Late Show'

Presidential hopeful Bernie Sanders appeared on CBS’s The Late Show on Friday night.

Introduced by Stephen Colbert as “the Democratic front runner in New Hampshire and Iowa,” – a reference to recent polls showing him leading Hillary Clinton, Sanders received a roaring welcome as the crowd chanted “Bernie!” while he took his seat.

When Colbert asked the Vermont Senator if he was the “Democratic Trump,” Sanders was quick to distance himself from the business-mogul turned politician.

“I think that what Trump is doing is appealing to the baser instincts among us: xenophobia and, frankly, racism—describing an entire group of people, in this case, Mexicans, as rapists or as criminals,” Sanders said. “I think that is disgraceful and not something we should be doing in 2015.”

Moreover, Sanders touched on several of his signature campaign issues, including income inequality, universal health care, as well as campaign financing and education during the interview.

Later during the interview, Colbert asked Sanders how much he really wanted the post of commander-in-chief, as he has continually refused the financial support of a super PAC during his campaign.

“Frankly, I don’t support the agenda of corporate America or the billionaire class,” Sanders said. “I don’t want their money.”
