Council on American-Islamic Relations asks Ben Carson to withdraw from race after controversial comments

Republican presidential hopeful Ben Carson has been asked to withdraw from the race by the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) after expressing he doesn’t think a Muslim should be President.

After being slammed by CAIR and receiving public backlash, Carson is now backtracking from the controversial statement made on Sunday on NBC’s “Meet The Press.”

According to CNN Carson is attempted to clarify his statement Tuesday by stating that he is more interested in the president prioritizing the Constitution over his or her faith.

Carson has expressed that his comments were taken out of context and insists that he does not care what faith an individual is as long as candidates put the constitution ahead of their faith.

However, his comments have drawn an outcry from CAIR. ABC News reported that CAIR national executive director Nihad Awad stated his belief that Carson was wrong in his assumptions that a Muslim shouldn’t be president and questioned his leadership.

Carson has reached out to CAIR and the two sides will be meeting but the group still believes he should apologize to the Muslim community and American people.
