Emma Stone, Kate Winslet in talks for Yorgos Lanthimos’ ‘The Favourite’

Greek filmmaker Yorgos Lanthimos successfully made his English-language detbut this year and is hoping to build on the experience of The Lobster by making another film with an all-star cast. Kate Winslet, Emma Stone and Olivia Colman are in talks for his next film, The Favourite.

The project is a period piece set in England during the reign of Queen Anne, who ruled from 1702 to 1707. Colman, who is best known for starring in Broadchurch, will star as Queen Anne, while Winslet will play Sarah, Duchess of Marlborough. Stone will play Sarah’s distant and poor relative Abigail Masham. According to Deadline, which first reported on the project, the script was written by Deborah Davis and Tony McNamara.

The film will be produced by Scarlet Films’ Ceci Dempsey and Ed Guiney, Lee Magiday and Andrew Lowe of Element Pictures. Filming should start next year.

Stone recently earned her first Oscar nomination for Birdman and starred in Woody Allen’s Irrational Man this summer. Her next film is La La Land with Ryan Gosling. She just dropped out of one of the Billie Jean King biopics in the works.

Winslet is an Oscar winner and will next be seen in Steve Jobs. She’s also in The Divergent Series: Insurgent.

As for Lanthimos, his The Lobster earned rave reviews out of Cannes and is set to play at the New York Film Festival. It stars Colin Farrell and Rachel Weisz. Lanthimos is also known for his Oscar-nominated 2009 film Dogtooth.
