Facebook’s WhatsApp users hits 900 million

WhatsApp, the messaging system owned by Facebook, has now hit 900 million users and counting.

Fortune reported that WhatsApp has become so popular that it has gained 100 million users in the past six months alone. On Thursday evening, the app’s founder Jan Koum announced that the service officially has 900 million monthly active users around the world.

Facebook now has the most-popular messaging mobile apps in WhatsApp and its own Facebook Messenger, which has 700 million users; making regular old text messaging seem like a thing of the past.

For those who have still not joined or are not even sure exactly what WhatsApp is, know that the app used to charge it’s users a minimal fee of $1 per year after the first year, but that is no longer the case since it was bought by Facebook. So it’s an alternative way to share pictures and videos with others. Oh and there is no character limit for messages like with some of those pesky smartphones.

Tech Crunch noted that Koum has marketed the app by saying “No ads! No games! No gimmicks!” And since there really are none, at least for now, there’s no reason to think that WhatsApp won’t surpass one billion users in the very near future.
