James Bond author Anthony Horowitz apologizes for saying Idris Elba is 'too street'

Anthony Horowitz, the James Bond author who caused a ruckus on Twitter today by suggesting that Idris Elba isn’t “suave” enough to play Ian Fleming’s famous spy, has apologized for those comments.

In an interview with the Daily Mail that was published this morning, the Alex Rider creator said he didn’t think Elba could play Bond.

“Idris Elba is a terrific actor, but I can think of other black actors who would do it better,” Horowitz said. He added, “For me, Idris Elba is a bit too rough to play the part. It’s not a colour issue. I think he is probably a bit too “street” for Bond. Is it a question of being suave? Yeah.”

Elba’s name has been trending on Twitter all day thanks to Horowitz’s comments, so the author had to issue an apology for expressing his opinions.

“I’m really sorry my comments about Idris Elba have caused offence,” Horowitz tweeted. “I was asked in my interview if Idris Elba would make a good James Bond. In the article I expressed the opinion that to my mind Adrian Lester would be a better choice but I’m a writer not a casting director so what do I know? Clumsily, I chose the word ‘street’ as Elba’s gritty portrayal of DCI John Luther was in my mind but I admit it was a poor choice of word. I am mortified to have caused offence.”

Horowitz has written the newest Bond book, Trigger Mortis, which comes out on Tuesday.

Elba’s name has popped up as a potential replacement for Daniel Craig once his contract is up. Elba did shoot to international fame starring in Luther, which just filmed a new season. He is also starring in Netflix’s Beasts Of No Nation and next year’s Star Trek Beyond.
