Joey Meek, friend of Charleston shooting suspect Dylann Roof, arrested

Authorities said Thursday that a friend of the Charleston church shooting suspect Dylann Roof has been arrested.

The Associated Press reported that the FBI arrested Joey Meek, 21, on Thursday and charged him with lying to federal authorities and concealing information during their investigation. He was scheduled to appear in front of a judge on Friday.

Roof is accused of gunning down nine people at Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston while they attended bible study last June. The 21-year-old had posted hate messages while posing with the Confederate flag on social media.

After the shootings, Meek spoke to CNN and recalled a time when he said he had to calm Roof down as he was in a drunken state and threatened "to do something crazy." Meek told authorities that after he heard the shooter's description he immediately called police gave them information about his friend.

Roof is said to have admitted to the massacre and if he is convicted could face the death penalty.
