Matt Damon calls gay rumors 'deeply offensive,' says it's 'really hard' for openly gay actors

Matt Damon and Ben Affleck were the subject of gay rumors at the beginning of their careers and he’s now opening up about actors who are openly gay in Hollywood.

Damon, who is a married father of four, said he thinks being as private as possible about your personal life is the way to go in order to be as successful as possible as an actor.

In an interview with The Guardian, Damon admitted he was “deeply” offended by gay rumors at the start of his career.

"I think it must be really hard for actors to be out publicly,” he said, citing Rupert Everett as an example.

Calling him “more handsome than anybody” and a “classically trained actor,” Damon said, "It's tough to make the argument that he didn't take a hit for being out."

“I think you're a better actor the less people know about you period," he continued. "Sexuality is a huge part of that. Whether you're straight or gay, people shouldn't know anything about your sexuality because that's one of the mysteries that you should be able to play."

In 2012, Damon talked about the gay rumors with Playboy, which swirled at the time Good Will Hunting came out. He said he didn’t deny the rumors because he “didn’t want to offend my friends who were gay -- as if being gay were some kind of f**king disease.”
