Nickelodeon to bring back '90s shows with new programming block

For the past few weeks, Nickelodeon has been teasing The Splat, some sort of revival of classic shows from the '90s. Now, the network has officially released the details.

Although it was speculated that The Splat would be its own dedicated channel, tghat unfortunately isn't the case. Instead, it will be an eight hour programming block on Teen Nick, airing each night from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m.

The Splat will extend beyond just television, though. The network describes The Splat as a "multiscreen content destination spanning television, seven social media platforms, and a dedicated website aggregating the most loved Nick content from the 1990s and beyond." Many were hoping this website could be some sort of streaming service with classic shows on demand, but that doesn't appear to be the case. Instead, it will "host social-media conversations about the programming," featuring Nickelodeon themed emojis, stickers and GIFs.

The Splat will debut on Teen Nick this October. It will feature a hybrid of nostalgic cartoons and live action shows like All That, Catdog, Are You Afraid of the Dark, Hey Arnold, Kenan and Kel, Rugrats and more. The block will also frequently include special event nights to get fans involved, such as October 12th's Rugrats Reptar Takeover night featuring all Reptar themed episodes of Rugrats.

This isn't a completely new idea, as Teen Nick has been airing a similar block since 2011 called The '90s Are All That, which broadcasts from 12:00 a.m. until 4:00 a.m. However, the lineup simply wasn't diverse enough, and at any given time, the network would only play four shows at most, never touching on 95% of '90s Nick. It seems like The Splat will simply be a natural evolution of The 90s Are All That, but this time with a larger chunk of time, a dedicated website, and a greater variety.

The Splat premieres on October 5 on Teen Nick.
