Steelers assistant coach allegedly assaults Patriots fan, NFL investigating (Report)

Pittsburgh Steelers tight ends coach James Daniel allegedly assaulted a New England Patriots fan as the team was heading into the locker room at the start of halftime during Thursday night’s game. NFL security is reportedly investigating the incident.

A league official told ESPN that the NFL does know about the alleged incident. A Steelers spokesman also said that they know about it and are investigating as well.

Daniel allegedly kicked a Patriots fan in his leg in front of witnesses while he was on his way to the locker room. When he returned to the coaching booth after halftime, police and NFL security were already there. Witnesses identified him and police told him to calm down. Witnesses told ESPN that he then began shouting. NFL security didn’t see that.

Steelers tight end Matt Spaeth told WPXI Channel 11 that this was out of character for Daniel.

“I've known him for a long time. I have a lot of love and respect for that guy. It would really shock me if that actually happened,” Spaeth said.

The Steelers’ 28-21 loss to the Patriots at Gillette Stadium last night was about as exciting off the field as it was on the field. There was a problem with the Steelers’ coaches’ headsets and even reports that the Steelers would complain to the NFL about it. However, the Steelers decided not to because the NFL said that the league provides the communications equipment for both teams.
