Steven Spielberg’s DreamWorks cutting ties with Disney, could move to Universal

Steven Spielberg, who has made most of his greatest films at Universal, could be heading back to the studio. His DreamWorks studio is reportedly in talks with Universal and plans to split from Disney next year.

Disney and DreamWorks have had a fruitful relationship since 2009, when DreamWorks left Universal. But that deal is up in August 2016 and The Hollywood Reporter claims that Spielberg isn’t looking to renew the deal. Therefore, The BFG, which Disney has agreed to even co-produce, will be the last Disney/DreamWorks film.

Spielberg taking DreamWorks back to Universal shouldn’t be a surprise, especially for longtime fans of his work. He has always been close with the studio, going back to the 1970s, and has even had an office there while DreamWorks films were being released by Paramount and Disney.

Spielberg was also a big part of Universal’s incredible success this summer. Even though he was credited as executive producer, he was reportedly very hands-on with Colin Trevorrow’s Jurassic World.

The director’s next film is Bridge of Spies with Tom Hanks, which will be released by Disney on Oct. 16. The BFG hits theaters on July 1, 2016 and Ready Player One, which is already being produced at Warner Bros., will open in December 2017.

Other future DreamWorks projects include Lasse Hallstrom’s A Dog’s Pleasure, The Girl on the Train with Emily Blunt and Ghost in the Shell with Scarlett Johansson.
