Tornado in South Carolina damages homes, causes power outages

A tornado swept through a community in Charleston on Friday morning leaving damaged homes, downed trees and power outages in its destruction path.

The Associated Press noted that the twister hit Johns Island around 1 a.m. leaving homes and businesses without power. Authorities said that many roads have been closed off due to fallen trees and power lines.

"Crews are methodically going through the area looking to help people," said James Ghi, a battalion chief with the St. John's Fire District.

There have been no reports of injuries at this time.

"Obviously, we're really thankful,” he said.

The National Weather Service said that approximately a dozen homes sustained damage from the tornado, which was likely spawned by a storm system that drenched the area.

One social media user captured photos of some of the damage left behind.
