University of Texas athletic director Steve Patterson resigns

The University of Texas accepted athletic director Steve Patterson’s resignation on Tuesday.

Although early reports stated Patterson was fired, the decision was later spun as a resignation after late day calls between reporters and Texas President Gregory Fenves. During his 22-month tenure, Patterson upset fans and lost support from Texas coaches. To many the decision was a long time coming and came as no surprise.

Sports Illustrated reports Fenves received numerous complaints regarding lack of transparency in handling football season-ticket holders as well as financing a new tennis facility and poor outreach to donors and failed communication with Patterson’s department employees.

The firing of Patterson comes on the heels of multiple other firings at Texas including football coach Mack Brown, basketball coach Rick Barnes and school president Bill Powers

According to ESPN Houston attorney and former Texas linebacker and defensive end Mike Perrin will take over as interim athletic director.

Perrin will be introduced as Texas’ interim athletic director on Wednesday and has agreed to a deal through August 2016.
