‘Assassin’s Creed’: Jeremy Irons, Brendan Gleeson join Michael Fassbender

Assassin’s Creed is hoping to break the curse that hovers over video game-based movies and with a cast like this, it should be easy. Michael Fassbender and Marion Cotillard will be joined by two fantastic actors, Jeremy Irons and Brendan Gleeson.

The casting was first reported by Deadline and confirms that director Justin Kurzel, New Regency and UbiSoft are serious about turning this into a good movie. Irons, an Oscar winner, will star as the father of Cotillard’s character. Emmy winner Gleeson will star as Fassbender’s father.

Assassin's Creed started production last month and also stars Michael Kenneth Williams and Ariane Labed. It reunites Kurzel with Fassbender and Cotillard, as the trio just worked on a new adaptation of Macbeth.

The film isn’t expected to be a direct adaptation of the popular video game’s story. It does have to fight the trend of video game-based bombs, which was kept alive by this summer’s Hitman: Agent 47 flop.

Irons has several films in the can, including , in which he plays Alfred Pennyworth. Gleeson stars in this month’s Suffragette with Carey Mulligan and Ron Howard’s In The Heart of the Sea, which opens on Dec. 11.
