A Georgia Institute of Technology student, who went missing last week, was located by his friends on Monday all thanks to an iPhone app.

Reuters noted that an Atlanta police spokesman said that James “Jimmy” Hubert was found injured, but alive, in a ditch a few miles away from campus.

The senior engineering student was last seen leaving a party Friday at The Foundry at Puritan Mill just after 11 p.m.  Doing their own detective work, his friends began trying to piece together what could have happened to him.

The group soon realized that Hubert had his date’s smartphone in his pocket when he disappeared so they decided to use the “Find my iPhone" app installed on her smartphone.

The app allowed them to track the location of the last known ping. His friends then drove to spot where the ping was detected.

"We got out of the car, then we jumped over two train tracks and walked," said Emma Jeffrey. "We walked about 10 minutes past where the ping was. We were about to turn around, which is when I said, 'Is that a person?' "

Hubert was disoriented, but conscious. His belongings were gone and it is thought that he was mugged and left in the ditch. He was taken to an area hospital and the investigation is ongoing.

After he was rescued authorities paid gratitude to his friends who never stopped looking for him.

"Thanks go to the students for not giving up on their friend," Rob Connolly, chief of the Georgia Tech Police Department said.
