Lionsgate really wants a sequel to 'The Cabin in the Woods'

The 2012 horror film The Cabin in the Woods didn't exactly break box office records, but it has developed a huge cult following. Now, Lionsgate officially wants to make a sequel.

In an interview with Den of Geek, Drew Goddard, director of The Cabin in the Woods and screenwriter of The Martian, said the studio wants The Cabin in the Woods 2.

"The studio wants to do it," he said. "They've come to us."

The "us" in that statement includes Joss Whedon, who co-wrote the film with Goddard over the course of one weekend. Since then, Whedon has gained much more recognition in Hollywood after directing the first two Avengers movies.

So the studio wants a sequel, but do Goddard and Whedon want to make it? Even though the original movie ends with the entire world being destroyed, Goddard didn't exactly rule a sequel out while not committing to one either.

"There's nothing in the hopper right now, but who knows," Goddard said. "The way Joss and I work, we might wake up tomorrow and go, 'let's go do that,' or whatever."

Most fans assumed any followup would have to be a prequel given the ending of the last movie, but Goddard seemed to imply here that if they made another one, they could probably figure out a way to make it a proper sequel.

The Cabin in the Woods hit theaters in 2012 and grossed $66 million worldwide. Goddard has since worked on Marvel's Daredevil, and his new project, The Martian, is now playing in theaters.
