The hiring was first reported by The Hollywood Reporter and is a rare movie gig for Cross. While he created the gritty crime drama Luther, his movie credits are limited. He worked on Pacific Rim and the 2013 horror movie Mama.

Carpenter wrote the original film with Nick Castle and directed it. The film is set in a 1997 Manhattan, which had been turned into a maximum security prison. When the President crashes there, Snake (Kurt Russell), one of the best baddasses in movie history, is enlisted to save him. It was followed by a much-less beloved sequel, 1996’s Escape from L.A..

Fox thinks that it can reboot the series like it did with the Planet of the Apes series. Carpenter is involved as an executive producer.

This isn’t the only classic Carpenter action movie getting a remake. In June, it was reported that Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson will star in a remake of 1986’s Big Trouble In Little China.

With Cross on board, maybe he can convince Luther star Idris Elba to play the new Snake?
