Playboy to eliminate nude photos in print magazine as part of redesign

It’s the end of an era. Playboy has announced they will not continue publishing nude photos in their print magazine as part of their March 2016 redesign.

Founder and editor in chief, Hugh Hefner, has agreed to the decision to take a more modernized approach to the magazine. Cory Jones, chief content officer, was the one who approached him with the idea last month.

Hefner told the New York Times the iconic men’s magazine will still feature a Playmate of the Month, although she won’t appear nude. They will also still publish photos of women posing provocatively.

Scott Flanders, Playboy’s chief executive, explained, “You’re now one click away from every sex act imaginable for free. And so it’s just passé at this juncture.”

Alliance for Audited Media numbers show Playboy’s circulation has dropped from 5.6 million in the ‘70s to about 800,000 copies today, so a drastic redesign is welcome. Past efforts haven’t had the impact the Playboy team set out for.

Business Insider reports their biggest competition now will be Vice Media.
