‘Ash vs. Evil Dead’ recap episode 101: ‘El Jefe’

Ash vs. Evil Dead premiered on Starz Halloween night. The deadites are back. Will Ash be able to save the world again? Get to know Ash and his friends better in episode 101: "El Jefe."

Ash buckles himself into a girdle and throws on some cologne to look for girls at the local bar. Before heading out the door, he puts on his fake hand. He has the same car as he did in the Evil Dead films.

Ash pulls up to the Woodsman bar. He tells the bartender to get him a drink plus two of what the lady down the bar is having. She ignores him. He tells her he lost his hand by saving an 8-year-old boy from the train tracks. They have sex in the bathroom. In the middle of it, she becomes possessed and says, “We’re coming for you.” He backs off, but she becomes normal again. He says it hasn’t happened in 30 years. He decides to finish having sex before leaving.

When Ash gets home, he opens a trunk to find the Necronomicon. He finds a bag of marijuana stuck between the pages and remembers that he got high with a woman who asked him to recite poetry. He pulled out the book and the two of them read from it.

We see from the demons’ point of view, going through the woods up to a house where the police have arrived. They were called because a woman was screaming for her life, but now everything is dead quiet. They hear a noise and decide to enter the house. They go in through separate doors. One cop, Amanda, finds a woman dead. She calls for her partner, Carson, but there’s no answer.

She goes through the house and finds him staring at a rocking chair that’s moving by itself. He says something’s not right. They hear crying and see a figure beneath a sheet. They advance, guns up. Amanda removes the sheet and they find the woman Ash read the book with. They ask her to turn around with her hands up. She becomes possessed and twists her head on backwards, reaching for them. The demon knocks Carson out of the way and tells Amanda that they know who she is. The demon attacks Amanda with a pair of scissors, penetrating her hand. Amanda shoots her multiple times, but she doesn’t stop. Carson shoots the demon in the head, blowing part of it off and she drops. He asks what it was and suddenly the demon is up again, throwing him against a set of antlers on the wall where he is impaled. Amanda blows the rest of the demon’s head off, then the shutters slam shut.

Amanda looks around the room with her flashlight, searching for Carson. She hears noises on the ceiling and sees him climbing the walls. She screams. He jumps on her from the ceiling and she drops her gun. He pulls on her and she kicks him, reaching for her gun. When she gets it, his face turns back to normal and he cries, asking her not to shoot him. He says he needs her… to die. He jumps at her and she shoots him in the head.

Ash leaves his trailer. He calls a book store saying he wants to get some help with a translation. He calls to his neighbor Vivian. He asks her to get his trailer in order so he can leave town. The sky becomes dark and the wind starts. One sheet on Vivian’s clothesline isn’t blowing. Ash reaches for it and finds Vivian with a demon face. She says they are near and his time comes again. Ash peels out of the trailer park in his car.

Ash goes in to work, hoping to get his check early so he can leave. His boss tells him he has to wait until the end of his shift, store policy. He tells Ash to take a box of lightbulbs out back without breaking them. He immediately drops the bulbs once his boss is out of sight. His friend Pablo appears with a broom. He says he has turkey burgers to grill if Ash wants to hang out that night. Ash tells him he has to skip town. Pablo asks what’s going on, but Ash won’t tell him.

Pablo says he just got his neighbor, Kelly, hired and points to a gorgeous woman in the front of the store. Ash approaches and hits on her. He tells her to thank her mother for passing her genes down in all the right places. Kelly says her mother died six months ago in a car accident. He tries to touch her face, but she twists his arm behind his back and tells him he’ll need another wooden hand if he tries it again.

At a diner, Amanda is having coffee. The waiter gives her a refill and tells her she’ll be back to work before she knows it. She says she doesn’t know. She has to pass an internal affairs homicide inquest and a psych evaluation. Everything suddenly goes quiet and she sees a demon face on a young girl a couple of tables away. She looks away and then glances again. The girl is back to normal. A woman at the table in between, played by Lucy Lawless, asks if she’s alright. Amanda says she doesn’t trust her eyes. The woman says there’s nothing wrong with her eyes and leaves.
