Box office: Angelina Jolie, Brad Pitt’s ‘By The Sea’ struggles in limited release

Despite starring both Angelina Jolie Pitt and her husband, Brad Pitt, By The Sea struggled in limited release this weekend. While it is true that the film was only in 10 theaters, it doesn’t help the film’s future prospects.

By The Sea, which was written and directed by Jolie Pitt, opened the AFI Fest earlier this month with mixed to negative reviews. The film is a tribute to the European art house films of the 1960s and 1970s, a fact that already limits its audience, despite the huge stars.

Considering that the audience the film is directed towards is likely to read those reviews, it’s not surprising that the limited release didn’t do so well. According to TheWrap, the film made just $95,000, with a per-screen average of $9,544.

Universal is releasing the film, after it and Jolie Pitt had success with last year’s Unbroken. As The Hollywood Reporter notes, the studio will increase the theater count to 100 theaters for this weekend. However, future plans aren’t set, so the studio will keep a close eye on how it does.

For an example of what good reviews can do for a limited release, check out what happened with Tom McCarthy’s Spotlight. The newspaper drama, which includes a cast with Michael Keaton and Mark Ruffalo, opened to $302,276 from just four theaters. It added $1.4 million this weekend, despite only reaching 60 theaters.
