Box office: ‘Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 2’ earns $16 million Thursday

Lionsgate’s The Hunger Games saga is taking its final bow at the box office this weekend thanks to The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 2. Things got off to a smooth start last night with $16 million.

Mockingjay 2 is the final film in the saga, which adapted Suzanne Collins’ YA trilogy to the silver screen and made Jennifer Lawrence a household name. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the film will be screened at over 4,000 locations this weekend and many expect the movie to make between $120 million and $125 million on opening weekend.

Outside of the U.S., the film is also doing well. It’s already grossed $43 million from 68 markets and opens in 19 more territories this weekend.

Mockingjay 1 was a bit of a disappointment at the box office. It opened to a $17 million Thursday, and grossed $121.9 million over its first weekend. However, as Box Office Mojo points out, Catching Fire did much better in November 2013, with $25.5 million on Thursday and a $158 million weekend.

There are two other films opening at the box office this weekend. Sony’s R-rated holiday comedy The Night Before with Seth Rogen, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Anthony Mackie, hits theaters. The last new release is STX’s Secret In Their Eyes, a remake of the acclaimed 2009 Argentinian film. This stars Julia Roberts and Nicole Kidman and made $170,000 Thursday.

The Night Before is expected to open with around $15 million, while Secret might be lucky to hit $10 million.
