'Fantastic Four' sequel removed from Fox's schedule

After the disaster that was Fantastic Four, it looks like the sequel may no longer be happening.

According to Box Office Mojo, Fox has now removed Fantastic Four 2 from their upcoming slate of films. The release date has changed from June 9, 2017 to TBD, although it seems likely that this is just the way of quietly cancelling the project.

That's not exactly surprising, as the movie grossed only $56 million in the United States and was bashed by critics and fans. In fact, director Josh Trank sent out a tweet disowning his own film the day before it came out. That was after months of rumors about on set drama, so the whole situation was pretty unfortunate for everyone.

After that, fans just assumed the sequel was cancelled, but producer Simon Kinberg said back in September that Fantastic Four 2 was still happening. So much for that.

Fox's other comic book properties include X-Men and Deadpool, so the studio will probably be focusing on those now rather than trying to retool Fantastic Four. And the countdown to Fox selling the rights back to Marvel begins.
