St. Louis Rams Stedman Bailey in critical, stable condition after being shot

St. Louis Rams wide receiver Stedman Bailey is in critical but stable condition after being shot in a car Tuesday night.

The incident took place at 8:45 pm at a Miami Gardens residence. Bailey was in the car with his cousin Antwan Reeves and there were also two children in the car. Another car drove by and fired shots at the vehicle that Bailey and his cousin were in. Bailey was shot twice in the head while Reeves, who was driving the car, was shot multiple times as he tried to protect the children that were in the car, according to ESPN.

The children weren’t injured and Reeves was taken into surgery Tuesday night. Bailey, whose injuries are not life threatening, is scheduled to have surgery on Wednesday.

"We are aware Stedman Bailey was involved in an incident this evening," the Rams said in a statement. "We have spoken with Stedman and he is in the hospital in critical, but stable, condition. We are gathering facts about the situation and will provide updates as we learn more."

Bailey was drafted by the Rams in 2013. He was suspended for four games earlier this month for violating the NFL’s substance abuse policy. He has started three games in each of the last two seasons. This season he has 12 receptions for 182 yards and one touchdown, according to the Associated Press. Last year, Bailey had 30 receptions with a 14.5 yard average and one touchdown.

The Rams signed wide receiver Wes Welker after Bailey was suspended. Bailey is eligible to return to the roster on Dec. 7.
