State Department issues worldwide travel alert ahead of Thanksgiving

During the busiest travel time of the year for Americans the U.S. State Department has issued a worldwide travel alert.

The alert was put in place in the wake of the terror attacks in Paris and over concerns and threats from groups like al-Qaeda, Boko Haram and ISIS. It was issued Monday, the same day that Belgium's prime minister announced that the capital city Brussels would remain at the highest alert level for at least another week.

The State Department is not asking that people avoid traveling, but instead would like everyone to exercise caution when doing so.

"U.S. citizens should exercise vigilance when in public places or using transportation," the alert said. "Be aware of immediate surroundings and avoid large crowds or crowded places. Exercise particular caution during the holiday season and at holiday festivals or events."

USA Today noted that a similar travel alert was put in place last December.

The current travel alert is set to expire on Feb. 24, 2016 after it is reviewed.
