Ang Lee’s Muhammad Ali boxing 3D movie revived at Studio 8

Two-time Oscar winner Ang Lee is finally going to get to make his Thrilla in Manila movie. Thanks to Jeff Robinov’s Studio 8, his film about the iconic fight between Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier is moving forward.

Back in August 2013, Lee expressed interest in making the film, which was then set up at Universal Pictures and was being written by Peter Morgan (The Queen, Frost/Nixon).

Now, Deadline is reporting that the project has moved to Studio 8. The studio said that the project was only in early development, but Deadline reports that Lee is already scouting locations and wants to make it his next project.

After the project was delayed, Lee moved on to Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk for Sony. That film is being shot at 120 frames per second and in 3D.

Lee has shown excitement for new technological breakthroughs in filmmaking. He won his second Oscar for directing Life of Pi, a 3D film that was mostly filled with CGI. The director also won an Oscar for directing Brokeback Mountain.

Like Billy Lynn, Sony will release the Thrilla in Manila movie, which is currently untitled.
