Another character was originally going to die in 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens'

Star Wars fans are still reeling over that major death in The Force Awakens, but it could have been worse, as originally another character was slated to die in the movie.

According to GQ, Oscar Isaac said Poe Dameron was going to be killed off in The Force Awakens. Isaac said he met with director J.J. Abrams to discuss a role in the film, and Abrams said of Poe, "He's amazing! He opens the whole movie! And then he dies."

Isaac was obviously disappointed, but Abrams convinced him he should still take the part, telling the actor that this was a chance to help craft a character that would live on in Star Wars novels, video games, etc. He thought it over and then emailed Abrams to accept the part, by which point everything had changed. Abrams immediately told him, "Nevermind...you're in the whole movie now."

If you've seen The Force Awakens, it's pretty clear where Poe would have died, as it sounds like in the early drafts he simply didn't eject from the X-Wing on Jakku. The idea of opening the story on an amazing hero who we think is the lead but who then suddenly dies is something Abrams has toyed with before, as on Lost, Jack Shepard was originally meant to be killed off at the end of the pilot episode.
