Barbra Streisand returning to directing with Catherine The Great biopic

Barbra Streisand, who returned to Hollywood a couple of years ago to act, is now ready to direct again. She is reportedly attached to a film about the Russian Empress Catherine the Great.

The film will be produced by Gil Netter (Life of Pi, The Blind Side). According to The Hollywood Reporter, the script was penned by Kristina Lauren Anderson and was named the best unproduced screenplay for the 2014 Black List.

Streisand has only directed three films, but all three have earned attention from the Oscars. She directed Yentl (1983), Best Picture nominee The Prince of Tides (1991), and The Mirror Has Two Faces (1996). She returned to Hollywood in 2012 to star in the Seth Rogen comedy The Guilt Trip and also starred in 2010’s Little Fockers.

Catherine the Great ruled Russia from 1762 to 1796 and Hollywood has tried to bring her story to life recently. Back in July, The Guardian reported that Angelina Jolie bought the option on Simon Sebag Montefiore’s 2000 biography on Catherine. Catherine Zeta-Jones also played Catherine in the 1996 TV movie Catherine The Great.
