'Fargo' season three set in 2008, season one characters may return

After jumping back to the 1970s, Fargo season three will return to the 21st century.

According to Entertainment Weekly, the third season of the hit FX series will take place in 2008, a few years after the events of season one.

This naturally leads fans to wonder if any of the characters from the first season will return, and showrunner Noah Hawley answered that with a simple "Possibly." It will more than likely feature a new cast of characters, but it sounds like there's room for an occasional drop in from Molly or Gus.

The first season of Fargo foreshadowed events in this second season when Lou Solverson talked about the massacre at Sioux Falls, so have we seen any hints towards next year's plot yet?

“There are going to be connections, the way the first year was connected to the movie and the second year was connected to the first, but I think part of the fun is figuring that stuff out and I wouldn’t want to take that away from anybody,” Hawley said. “There will be definitely things that connect to something in our story.”

Loosely based on the 1996 Coen brothers film of the same name, Fargo started off as a limited event, but FX renewed it for a second season after it became a huge success. The network just recently ordered a third season as well, which will debut sometime in 2016.

Fargo airs Mondays at 10 p.m. on FX.
