Killer whale at Sea World San Antonio dies

Sea World San Antonio announced Tuesday that a killer whale named Unna has passed away.

CNN reported that the 18-year-old, 4,600-pound orca died on Monday after battling an illness for a long period of time.

Reuters noted that animal rights groups, however, are very concerned over the timing of Unna’s passing as she is the third whale to have died at the park in the last six months.

Sea World then released a statement with more details on the mammal’s death.

The park said that Unna died from "resistant strain of a fungus called Candida,” and “While there were some indications that the treatment was having a positive effect, Unna had remained in serious condition and under 24/7 care.”

Sea World parks across the U.S. took quite a hit to their reputations after the airing of the 2013 documentary Blackfish. Since the special aired, Sea World San Diego has vowed to end all of its orca shows there.
