'Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension' to be released digitally just weeks after leaving theaters

The theatrical experience may be slowly coming to an end, with two of Paramount Pictures' recent films getting the earliest home video releases we've ever seen.

According to VarietyParanormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension and Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse will both receive digital releases less than one month after they left theaters.

Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension hits digital venues on Dec. 15, a mere 19 days after the end of its theatrical run. Scouts Guide will receive the same treatment, also being released 19 days after leaving theaters.

This is significant because for theater chains, the length between a movie's closing and its home release is extremely important. If consumers can simply wait a little over a month and then watch the film from the comfort of their living room, why wouldn't they? In the past, up to a year might go by before the movie could be seen anywhere but a theater, which helps drive ticket sales.

However, Paramount unveiled a plan earlier this year that would allow them to release a film 17 afters it dips below 300 theaters. This was so controversial that back in October, many theaters actually refused to show Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension. So, the horror sequel was only screened in 1,600 theaters compared to the previous entry's 2,800.
