Ranking All 16 Pixar Features: Where does 'Inside Out' & 'The Good Dinosaur rank?

One of my first ever theater-going experiences began rather simply, with fluffy clouds on a bright blue background. It was soon to be revealed that they were on the walls of Andy’s room and Andy was, just like me, a kid who still loved playing with toys. Little did I know 20 years and 16 movies later, we’d still be talking about the studio that made the dream of toys coming to life a reality.

Pixar has released its 15th and 16th feature films, Inside Out and The Good Dinosaur, in 2015. With that in mind, it seems like the perfect time to cover the studio’s incredible history by ranking its feature films.

This all does seem pointless, considering that the studio has never made an outright awful movie. Sure, their last three films before 2015 have been creative disappointments, but none of them were hard to watch. Indeed, one of them still managed to win the Best Animated Feature Oscar (probably because Academy voters think that Disney and Pixar are the only ones making animated movies, but that’s for another argument another day).

Pixar’s movies are defined by their emotional strength. Like the golden age of the Disney Studio some 70 years ago, Pixar has been able to get us to care about inanimate objects, from toys to cars, and animals that don’t usually talk. We have been taken from the kitchens of Paris to the superhero world, from anthills to monsters. We have experienced the feeling of losing your favorite toy and the feeling of losing your soul mate.

These movies are all animated within a computer. It’s all zeroes and ones, but there’s so much heart in each film that you easily forget that. The studio may be owned by a real Buy-N-Large, but it’s never lost that feeling, even in sequels and prequels.

So, let’s rev up our engines and let balloons fly. It’s time to look at Pixar.

Note: This list was originally published in June. It has been updated with the new releases of 2015.
