‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ earns late Best Picture nomination from Critics’ Choice Awards

In an unprecedented move, the Broadcast Film Critics Association voted to add Star Wars: The Force Awakens to its list of Best Picture nominees for the Critics’ Choice Awards. That means a whopping 11 films are up for the award.

The decision comes after a special vote by the BFCA’s board of directors, reports The Hollywood Reporter, since many were not able to see the film before the rest of the nominees were announced.

Since The Force Awakens earned near unanimous positive reviews, the film also landed a spot among the American Film Institute’s Top 10 films of 2015. However, it was not nominated for any Golden Globe awards, as those nominations were set before The Force Awakens was screened for critics.

The other nominees for the Critics’ Choice Awards Best Picture prize are The Big Short, Bridge of Spies, Brooklyn, Carol, Mad Max: Fury Road, The Martian, The Revenant, Room, Sicario and Spotlight.

There’s no word on if the BFCA would add The Force Awakens to the list of Best Sci-Fi/Horror Film nominees, which includes The Martian, Mad Max: Fury Road, It Follows, Ex Machina and Jurassic World.

The Critics’ Choice Awards is on Jan. 17 and airs on A&E.
