Trailer Park: ‘Star Wars’ plans to destroy the box office competition

The day many movie fans have been waiting for has finally arrived. The highly anticipated follow-up to a film set in a galaxy far, far away is now available in theaters nationwide. For those that aren’t into sci-fi, there’s also a new Tina Fey and Amy Poehler comedy as well as an animated chipmunk adventure.

Set three decades after Return of the Jedi, Star Wars: The Force Awakens, brings back legendary characters and introduces new ones. The two hour and sixteen minute sci-fi adventure explains what happened over the past thirty years as the battle against the dark side continues. The PG-13 film stars Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, Oscar Isaac, Adam Driver, Max von Sydow and Daisy Ridley. The J.J. Abrams-written and directed film is available in conventional and 3D theaters.

When their parents sell their childhood home, two adult siblings return to collect their things in Sisters. The two won’t leave their home quietly. They go out with a bang by throwing one, big final bash. Tina Fey and Amy Poehler star in the one hour and fifty-eight minute comedy alongside Maya Rudolph, John Leguizamo, John Cena and James Brolin. It’s rated R for sex, language and drugs.

Alvin, Simon and Theodore hit the road in Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip. In fear that their dad, Dave, is going to propose to his girlfriend in Miami, the chipmunks head down south to put a stop to it. The PG animated comedy stars Jason Lee and features the voices of Justin Long, Matthew Gray Gubler, Jesse McCartney, Kaley Cuoco, Anna Faris and Christina Applegate. The family adventure plays for one hour and twenty-six minutes.

A retired CIA field agent is captured by a terrorist organization in Extraction. His government analyst son, who was denied field work, takes matters into his own hands to get him back. Bruce Willis, Kellan Lutz, Gina Carano and D.B. Sweeney star in the limited released adventure. The one hour and twenty-three minute thriller is rated R for violence, language, sex and nudity.

A secretary takes her boss’ car for a joy ride in The Lady in the Car with Glasses and a Gun. During her trip, she stops at a small town that she believes she’s never visited, but, to her surprise, everyone there knows her. More chaos and confusion set in when she discovers that there’s a dead body in the truck of the car and she’s the main suspect of the murder. The unrated thriller runs for one hour and thirty-three minutes. It’s available in limited theaters.

Arguably one of the biggest films of the year hits theaters this weekend; but just because Star Wars is now out, doesn’t mean there aren’t more great films being released. On Christmas Day, comedies, dramas and action films starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Jennifer Lawrence, Bradley Cooper, Mark Wahlberg, Will Ferrell, Will Smith and Samuel L. Jackson enter the box office race.
