Amanda Knox’s ex, Raffaele Sollecito, is back in the news after he filed a lawsuit seeking monetary damages for the time he spent in prison when he and Knox were convicted of Meredith Kercher’s murder.
On Thursday, Sollecito’s lawyer, Giulia Bongiorno, told NBC News that his client is seeking $545,000 compensation, which is the maximum amount allowed under Italian law, for wrongful imprisonment.
As the Guardian noted, in 2007 Sollecito and Knox, who were dating at the time, were arrested after Kercher, Knox’s roommate, was found half naked and stabbed to death in the apartment they shared. The two lovers were each found guilty after an investigation by Italian authorities that was said to be flawed, then found not guilty after spending about four years in prison. They were found guilty again after their acquittal in 2013, but later Rome’s high court cleared them.
After being acquitted, one of Knox’s attorneys said that she would also be seeking compensation for wrongful imprisonment.
