‘The Exorcist’ TV series gets pilot order from Fox

Fox is moving ahead with plans to bring William Friedkin’s iconic horror movie The Exorcist the to the small screen. The network put in a pilot order on Friday.

The TV version will be a serialized version of the story told in William Peter Blatty’s 1971 novel, in which two men try to help save a young girl from demonic possession. According to TheWrap, the pilot will be written by Jeremy Slater, who wrote the horror film The Lazarus Effect and worked on last year’s Fantastic Four.

The executive producers are James Robinson, David Robinson, Barbara Wall and Slater. It will be a 20th Century Fox TV production.

Morgan Creek, which now has the rights to the Exorcist franchise, has been trying to turn it into a show since at least 2012. In August 2013, the series was still being shopped around to networks. Recently, there was some concern that Morgan Creek had plans to make a film remake, but the company said this wasn’t the case.

Friedkin’s 1973 film version of The Exorcist is among the few horror films to earn a Best Picture Oscar nomination and Blatty won the Best Adapted Screenplay Oscar. The film starred Max Von Sydow, Ellen Burstyn, Linda Blair and Jason Miller.

It does seem a bit strange that Fox would want to move ahead with another series with roots in film. After all, it just had a flop with Minority Report, which was based on the Steven Spielberg film.
