Mexican drug lord El Chapo captured, Mexico’s president says

After six months on the run and avoiding capture, drug lord Joaquin ‘El Chapo’ Guzman, has finally been taken into custody. Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto confirmed the news on Twitter.

“Mission accomplished: we have it. I want to inform the Mexican Joaquín Guzmán Loera has been arrested,” Nieto tweeted in Spanish Friday afternoon. He didn’t give any further details, but later thanked Mexico’s security forces for their efforts in a separate tweet.

Guzman is the leader of the Sinaloa drug cartel. He had escaped custody in 2001 and wasn’t captured again until 2014. In July 2015, he escaped the Altiplano Federal Prison by using a series of underground tunnels. Authorities reportedly came close to capturing him, but it wasn’t until today that he was finally taken into custody. Workers who allegedly helped El Chapo escape the maximum security prison were indicted in September.
