Penthouse ending print issues, going exclusively digital

As Playboy eliminates its nude photos, one of its rivals is completely ending its physical publication. Penthouse is going all digital.

After 50 years on newsstands, publisher FriendFinder Network told The Wall Street Journal that the magazine will only be offered digitally. Penthouse’s New York offices will also be closed and staff will be moved to FriendFinder’s Los Angeles offices.

“Reimagined for the preferred consumption of content today by consumers, the digital version of Penthouse Magazine will combine and convert everything readers know and love about the print magazine experience to the power of a digital experience,” FriendFinder, which operates adult social media sites, told the Journal.

At one point, Penthouse sold 5 million copies, but like its rival Playboy, its circulation has tumbled in the digital era. The company has also struggled since found Bob Guccione lost the magazine. He filed for bankruptcy in 2004. FriendFinder has also struggled, filing for bankruptcy itself in 2014.

Playboy is still going ahead with its print publication. The January/February issue was the last one to include a nude photoshoot, The famous Playboy Mansion is also going up for sale, but founder Hugh Hefner must be allowed to live their for the rest of his life.
