Sarah Palin says daughter's ex-fiance Dakota Meyer is trying to 'save face' with joint custody request

Despite Dakota Meyer filing legal documents to request joint custody of his daughter with ex-fiance Bristol Palin, former vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin is defending her daughter and slamming the Marine Corps veteran and recipient of the Congressional Medal of Honor.

As we previously reported, Meyer has filed paperwork for joint legal and physical custody of 3-week-old Sailor. He also requested child support.

Sarah Palin told ET the filing was an attempt to “save face” because he hasn’t been interested in his ex’s pregnancy or their daughter up until now.

“For many months we have been trying to reach out to Dakota Myers [sic] and he has wanted nothing to do with either Bristol's pregnancy or the baby," Palin said. "Paramount to the entire Palin family is the health and welfare of Sailor Grace."

Bristol’s rep also talked to ET about Meyer's child support request, saying in a statement, "My values are such that a real American hero doesn't ask for child support."

After Bristol gave birth, Meyer posted a photo of the baby to Instagram and wrote “Best Christmas present ever!! I couldn't be more proud of this little blessing.”
