Zayn Malik says he 'always wanted' to leave One Direction in first televised interview since leaving

Zayn Malik has revealed during a new interview that he never wanted to be in One Direction in the first place, nearly a year after leaving the band.

During his first televised interview, Malik told Apple Music's Beats 1Radio’s Zane Lowe he never felt like he belonged in One Direction and wanted to leave only a year into it.

“I just gave it a go because it was there at the time,” he told Lowe, MailOnline reports. “I think I kinda always wanted to go. From the first year, I never really wanted to be there in the band.”

Malik continued, “When I realized the direction that we were going in, mind the pun, with the music, I instantly realized it wasn't for me. How do you write a song from five people's perspective?”

Malik canceled his first television appearance on The Graham Norton Show earlier this week, which would've aired the same day his first solo single “Pillow Talk” comes out on Friday.

“I think the boys knew that in terms of the music, that wasn't my cup of tea,” he added. “When I was leaving the band, they didn't want me to leave. But I'd already made up my mind at that point.”
