‘It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia’ Recap: “Being Frank”

11:00 a.m. On a Friday. Philadelphia, PA

This week’s episode was a unique one as we experienced the entire show from Frank’s point of view. I know this show has never done this before and I can’t remember ever seeing this from any show that I remember watching. Frank wakes up groggy, assuming that he partied too hard the night before.

He is running late as he stumbles into Paddy’s and finds The Gang discussing their latest scheme. Frank is out of it and has no idea what is going on but plays along by deflecting to Dee with the usual bird insult. He races home to get his walkie talkie so he can communicate but is interrupted by his landlord, Wang.

A brief argument and Wang bragging about his snake meat sandwich leaves Wang and Frank both passing out after choking. Frank awakes in the hospital and after attempting to fondle the nurse, runs out and is called by The Gang on the walkie talkie. They need a ride so he texts Bill Ponderosa who arrives to get him, fresh off his divorce and highly intoxicated. He convinces Bill to give him his car so he can go to the bakery.

Frank rendezvous with The Gang and they again discuss the plan, to which Frank again doesn’t pay attention. They are outside a gated lot and after an awkward exchange with Mac and accidentally eating dog treats mixed with sleeping pills, he is off to retrieve a rug that Mac can use to climb over the barbed wire fence.

Frank’s crazy adventure takes him to his occasional lover Artemis’ house. He starts hallucinating due to the sleeping pills and decides to mix them with even more drugs. This proves amusing as he transforms into “Frankenstein mode” and proceeds to scream at people, steal hot dogs, chug liquor and get a 911 text from Bill. Bill is getting beat up at the skating rink after getting too friendly with a young girl. A confused Frank is quickly knocked out.

The journey is almost complete for Frank. He emerges from the trunk of the car and finds The Gang standing on the other side of the barbed wire fence. He is inside an impound lot and the entire plan is to retrieve Dennis’ impounded car. He dodges an angry dog and gets the car. He celebrates with calling Dee a bird one more time. Later that night, Frank and Charlie are preparing to go to sleep after another completed scheme and Charlie recommends they end the day with their favorite game - night crawlers.

The episode was very interesting. I honestly can’t remember watching an episode of a show from one character’s point of view. This season has been very good and even though tonight’s episode wasn’t my favorite, this season is still providing plenty of laughs that Always Sunny fans have come to expect over the years.
