Australian billionaire says full-scale Titanic replica will hit the ocean in 2018

Australian billionaire Clive Palmer believes that his Titanic II, a full-scale replica of the infamous Titanic that sank in 1912, will hit the high seas in 2018. Hopefully, its maiden voyage will be much better than the original Titanic’s.

Palmer’s project was first announced in 2012, just as the sinking of the Titanic turned 100. A year later, he insisted that he could use the replica to make a movie that’s better than James Cameron’s now-iconic 1997 film.

The Blue Star Line owner had originally planned to get the Titanic II on the water in 2016, but despite the delay, Palmer is pressing on. According to the Belfast Telegraph, the ship will look almost identical to the original ship, but it will feature some modern updates to meet modern safety requirements.

“The new Titanic will of course have modern evacuation procedures, satellite controls, digital navigation and radar systems and all those things you'd expect on a 21st century ship,” Blue Star Line global marketing director James McDonald told the Belfast Telegraph.

The 270-metre-long vessel will have nine floors, 840 cabins, Turkish baths, gyms and a swimming pool.

Unfortunately, the first voyage will not be a replica of the original trip from Southampton to New York that was derailed by Mr. Iceberg. Instead, it will travel from Jiangsu, China to Dubai, since it is being built in China.

As for that movie Palmer talked about in 2013... well, it might be best for him to forget that. You’re not going to make a better movie than Titanic.
